The Rev. John McNeill, who has just returned from Palestine, says a soldier said to him; “Is this the Promised Land? Well, I don’t know who (hey promised it to, but I don’t want it.”
The famous vine at Hampton Court Palace, which was planted in 1708, is bearing nearly five hundred bundles of grapes of (he Black Hamburg -variety, all in splendid condition. The grapes will he distributed by the King among wounded soldiers in hospital.
A German may be defined as a person who does not; know the difference between right and wrong. Hundreds of German deeds during these four years of war have evidenced to the full this absence of a moral code.
A New Zealander just returned from America, says that the American in general appears to have a very warm veneration for his ‘‘Starspangled Banner.” He adds: “You see them stand up smartly as a respect to their patriotic songs, and even in the street the men remove their hats to the flag-. Those who fail to do likewise very soon know it to their cost.”
