THREE MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT.

FOR UNLICENSED ALIEN

Dunedin, Oct. Hi

Eugene Soigle, a young German, failed at Stevenson and Cook’s foundry at Port Chalmers recently, and applied for employment. He was asked his nationality, and replied that he was a Swiss. He was eventually given work, with the result that in (ho Police Court to-day Soigle was charged that, being an unlicensed alien, he engaged in work on a certain steamer. Stevenson and Cook were charged with permitting Seigle to work on the steamer. Seiglc pleaded guilty, and stated that it: was in order to get work that he said he was a Swiss. He worked only one day. The firm believed he was a Swiss.

Counsel for Stevenson and Cook said the trouble arose through the man telling an untruth. When asked for his papers, he said he would bring them on the following day, but he did not do so, saying the police had them, and the manager rang up the police.

Seiglc was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, and Stevenson and Cook were lined £lB and costs.

Mr Young, S.M., said that the firm should have taken further precautions before engaging the man. The police stated that Seigle had reported himself daily since the war started, and his conduct had been all that could be desired.
