A QUESTION OF LOYALTY.

AIR. P. FRASER’S ATTITUDE. When question time eame at Air P. Eraser’s (Labour eandidate for Wellington Central) meeting the other evening, lie was asked: 'hire yon a loyal and true subject of King and country?” A section of the audience made a noise, protesting against the question, hut Mr Fraser replied that it was quite a legitimate one. The word “loyal” needed a hit of definition. He had been dealing with loyalists who had “rooked” the people (in New Zealand and overseas) to the extent of £45,000,000 of war profits. If it was loyal to do that sort of thing, then he was not a loyalist! If “loyal” meant that the Massey Government or any other Government had -to be accepted till it was voted out, then he was a loyalist. If an alteration of society required a transformation in any department of State for the making of a thorough democracy, he would stand for that. He could even bring himself to do without a Governor,

The questioner contended that Mr Fraser’s reply was evasive, and therefore the question was put again in this form: “Are you a loyal subject in this country in this great trouble we are going through?"

Mr Fraser: “I think I am. In addition to being loyal by the people of this country, I am loyal to the workers of the world,"
