SPRING SHOW.
The local Horticultural Society’s Spring - Show was held in the Town Hall on Thursday and Friday, and was formally opened by the Mayor (Mr John Chrystall), who referred to the educational value of the Society’s operations. He gave a brief outline of the Society’s progress, and stated that the Society was a valuable local asset.
The exhibits were well staged, unci the Secretary and stewards are to be commended in this connection. The entries to tailed 318, as' against 264 for 1914, 242 for 1915, 396 1916, and 340 for last year*. Some beautiful blooms were exhibited by Mr Bond (of Palmerston), who got a “leg in” for the Citizen’s Trophy; Mr Witched (Otaki), Mrs .McMurray (who won Mr Shailei-’s trophy), and Mrs A. S. Easton. The exhibits for Mr Bond’s trophy were disqualified, not being according to schedule. There was some misapprehension re the Citizens’ Trophy, which is for open competition, the trophy restricted to local growers being in the sweet pea exhibits at the Summer Show. . Outside exhibits should be encouraged, as they arc a stimulus to local growers. The judges were: Mr Shailer, cut blooms and pot plants; Mr Bond, fruit and vegetables; Mrs Imrie, decorative; and Mr E. U. Smith, cookery and home industries. The judging gave general satisfaction. The children’s decorative work was a line feature, and the juveniles outclassed the adults in the cookery seclion. The tea-rooms were in charge of Mesdamcs Procter and P. Robinson, while Miss Woodroofe again had charge of the sweets stall, and did record business. The Borough Band and ’Mr Betty’s orchestra contributed musical selections on both evenings. The attendance of the public was fair, but there could be a marked improvement in this connection. The secretary, committee, and stewards are to be congratulated upon the success of their efforts. The prize list appears on page 1.
