YOUTHFUL ESCAPEES.
BEFORE THE COURT. - Richard Harold Edwin Giles, the youthful offender who made bis escape from the Palmerston North gaol on Sunday evening last, and Wiis recaptured by Constable O’Donoglme at Oroua Downs on Wednesday, came before Mr J. IV. Poynton, S.M., at Palmerston North yesterday morning. Accused, who is only 18 years of age, iu addition to being under sentence of four years’ reformative treatment, was awaiting further sentence for two charges of theft committed since lie escaped from gaol. Giles was charged (1) with being iin incorrigible rogue, in that ho escaped from a place of legal imprisonment before the expiry of tbo term for which lie was committed; (2) with theft from the dwelling of. John Boyden, Himatangi, of an overcoat a safety razor, and spanner, valued at £2 10s; (3) with the theft from the dwelling of Charles Dawson, Oroua Downs, of an oilskin overcoat, valued at £2. Accused pleaded guilty to all the charges, and elected to bo dealt with summarily. On the charge of escaping from gaol he was sentenced to 12 months’ reformative treatment, and on the charges of theft, a Sentence of two months’ reformative treatment, on each charge was inflicted, the sentences to be concurrent witli accused’s present sentence of four years. Two youths who escaped from the Wcraroa training farm and were recaptured by Constable O’Donogliue at Foxton this week, mime before the Juvenile Court, Palmerston North, yesterday. On a charge of the theft of eight tins of tobacco, valued at 10s, the properly of Robert Gilchrist, Koputaroa, the boys were convicted and discharged. On the charge of escaping from tho school, they were each sentenced to twelve strokes of the birch.
