MOUTOA NOTES.

Mr and Mrs Mark Xewlh gave a very enjoyable evening in the school on Thursday last, in honour of (heir son-in-law, Pie. Stan. Pearce, who will shorlly he leaving Xew Zealand for the front. Visitors were present from Poxioii and every family in Ihe,district was represented. Ptc. Pearce is the grandson of one of Mouton’s oldest pioneers, the tale Mrs Edwards. Mr J. Galland, on behalf of those present, asked Ihe guest of the evening to accept a gift to remind him of his Montoa and Marotiri friends. Mr Galland made filling reference to the fighting qualities of Pte. ■Pearce’s family, who have pul up a fine record in service, and one of whom has paid the supreme sacrifice. All present wished him God speed and a safe return, and although deploring the necessity for his going, recognised that his duty lay clearly before him. Pte. Pearce suitably responded, and thanked all those present for their good wishes. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne’’ brought a very happy evening to a close.

The Moutoa ladies in charge of ■.the Patriotic Shop next Saturday "•have things well in hand, and should have a successful day. One feature of the shop will be the dressed poultry, so purchasers will have a chance to secure a tasty Sunday dinner. Amongst several competitions is to be a dressed sucking pig and a sheep. A sponge sandwich competition (no entry fee) is one of the attractions, the prizes being now on view in Mr Healey's window: Ist, a Dickens china cake plate, 2nd. a Dickens china cup and saucer. The sponges to become the property of the shop.
