EDUCATIONAL
Suva Ihe Palmerston Times: —■
“One of the more astute of the candidates for the local Education Board election in a country district has circularised the school committees asking them to nomi-
Hate him for a vacancy. In a number of eases lie lias succeeded in conveying the impression that- all the members of the committees concerned are in duly hound to vote for him. Of course, this is not the case. Every school committeeman will receive a separate ballot paper, and it will then remain for him or her to select the candidate who, in his or her opinion, is likely to render the most effective service,, not only to individual committees, but to the district as a whole. The edieati-* omil interests of New Zealand have in the past been retarded by too close a regard for parochial considerations. If the programme of the New Zealand Institute, which has already received emphatic public endorsement —and which aims at improving the status of the school teachers and raising the whole education system to a higher plane—is to be carried out, it will be necessary to eliminate the old parochial die-hards, , and elect to the Education Boards men or women of more, than ordinary capacity. The school committees have now an unique opportunity of performing a national service. It is to be hoped that they will exercise their rights with this single object in view.”
