THE PRICE OF SISAL.
DROP IN U.S.A. VALUES.
It is interesting, lo note that the stock of sisal in- Yucatan in April, lty.fi, was 107,000 hales; in April, 1917, 188,000 bales; and on 21st May, 1918, 450,000 bales. The sale of sisa l is coni rolled by a monopoly.
’Advice has been received locally that the United Slates Government Purchase Commission which regulates prices has reduced the pricq of, sisal by £l4 per ton. It is thought this may have some effect on the local price of hemp. It has. been noted for some time past that the Americans do not like the low fair quality of the New Zealand product, and it is very difficult (0 dispose of this quality to these buyers, ' Under the .circumstances,-it is hoped that New Zealand millers will bd; able to keep up the quality of thfeir fibre, so as to obtain the best prices procurable under more difficult conditions.
