SORTING CHARGES.

MEETING OF PROTEST. A meeting of local business people Avas held in Perreau’s rooms yesterday morning, with the object of protesting against the sorting charges imposed by the railway authorities on goods coming through the local, port. Mr M. E, Perreau Avas voted to the chair, and outlined the object of the meeting. Tradespeople submitted dockets showing that the imposition of this charge Avas in many eases in excess of Avharfagc dues. Protests had been made against; the charge to the local stationmaster, and it Avas stated that a rebate was to be made. The meeting Avas of opinion that the charges Avere made Avith the object of compelling tradespeople to divert their goods from the steamers to the raihvay. It was unanimously agreed to send a letter of protest to the Minister of Kaihvays against the imposition of the sorting charges, and asking for remission of same, Mr Smith Avas authorised to draft and forward the letter.
