“TWO-UP.”
HEAVY PENALTIES IMPOSED.
Gisborne, May 25,
In the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Mr Barton, S. M., convicted a number of men for playing “two-up.” Mr Burnard, for the accused, drew the attention of the Bench to the fact that all the accused were married men with large families and small means, which simply meant their families suffered if a heavy, penalty were imposed. His Worship “It is a pity that the money was not spent on their wives and families in the first instance.” Continuing, His Worship said; “After carefully considering the evidence and surrounding circumstances, I am satisfied that Harry Johnson, William Plowman, Peter Norberg, and Thomas Corkery took part in the game, but I have some doubt as to whether: Patrick Morris or Bichard Victor.-y did so, and therefore shall gyve them the benefit of the doubt, 'and the information in their cases will be dismissed. Defendants WTlliam Plowman, Peter Norberg and '.Thomas Corkery, will each be convicted and fined in the sum of £20., in default five weeks’ imprisonment with hard labour. Defendant Johnson, who admits having been previously convicted of a similar offence, is now convicted and fined a sum of £25, in default six weeks’ imprisonment with hard labour.”
Mr Barnard asked for time, and was allowed one month.
