EMPIRE DAY.

STATE SCHOOL CELEBRATION. Parents and friends are cordially invited to be present at the local State school on Friday afternoon next, to witness the combined Empire Day and King’s Birthday observation* which was postponed from last Friday, An interesting programme has been prepared, and will be carried out in the school hall, commencing at 2.30 p.m. The proceedings will consist of a tableau, songs, recitations, Empire declaration, and the unveiling of the names of the old boys and teachers of the school who have given their lives in the present great struggle. The headteacher, Mr Furrie, will be pleased if parents and friends will supply him with the names of any ex-scholars who have fallen, so that the list may be complete. His Worship the Mayor will address the school on “The Duties of Citizenship,” and the Chairman of tha School Committee will handle the subject of “Our King.” The afternoon will conclude with a tableau illustrating the Empire’s rally to the Motherland and the protection of Belgium. The school will adopt a suitable motto for the day, and competitions in patriotic drawing and design will be held in each room. Visitors will be at liberty to inspect the work at the conclusion of the ceremony.
