ACTION FOR LIBEL.

Wellington, May 22

At the Supreme Court, Mr Justice Edwards and a jury were engaged in hearing a case in rvliieh Luther Hopkins, solicitor, claimed £2,000 for alleged libel from each of the proprietors of the Post, Times, and Dominion, of Wellington, and the New Zealand Herald, of Auckland. The alleged libel was contained in a Press Association telegram from Christchurch, which was headed “Solicitor Struck off the Roll,” when as a matter of fact a rule nisi only was applied for. The plaintiff claimed that his credit, profession, and reputation had been injured. The defence admits the publication, but claims that it was without malice, and points out that the papers concerned published ;)n apology before the action was commenced. Evidence is being heard.
