FOXTON HARBOUR LOAN.

CARRIED BY LARGE MAJORITY,

ONLY 24 AGAINST THE PROPOSAL.

The poll taken on Tuesday in the Foxton Harbour District, on the proposal to borrow £16,000 (£5,000 for the purchase of the wharf, £lO,000 for a dredge, and £I,OOO to build suitable shed accommodation), resulted in the proposal being carried by an overwhelming majority, only 24 votes being recorded against it throughout the whole district. The weather was very bad, and prevented a large number from recording their votes. In Foxton and Pal-' merston North motor cars were provided free of charge by citizens to assist in getting voters to the poll. As far as Foxton was concerned, the polling was good, a much larger percentage of the number on the roll recording their votes than in any of the other centres. The ladling booths in the Counties closed at six o’clock, and those in the Boroughs at seven. About a quarter to seven (he first result was received by the returning officer, Mr W. Bock, being that of Manawatu County, and from this it, was seen that the result of the poll would be a handsome majority in favour of the loan. The Feilding result was received shortly after seven o’clock, followed by Foxton, Levin, Kairanga, and then Palmerston North, the whole of the figures being in before eight o’clock. The result was; FOR 1,370 AGAINST 24 Informal 9 The following are the figures for each district: — Aga- InforFor, inst. mal. Young, of Lakeside, and Ensign A. S. Podmore, eldest son of Mr and Mrs €. IT. Podmore, of Foxton. A large crowd assembled in the barracks* .which was tastefully decorated,- a huge wedding bell hanging over the bridal party. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a blue uniform, with large white sash, and was attended by her sister, Dora, as bridesmaid, a little cousin acting as flower girl. Lieutenant Jackson was best man. The ceremony was performed by Major Newby, assisted by Staff-Captains Thurkeller and Gunn. Reference was made to absent brothers of the bride and bridegroom, Trooper 11, H. Podmore, Driver C. L. Podmore, and Corporal A. G. Young. After the ceremony about 100 guests partook of the wedding breakfast provided by the bride’s mother.
