RECORD TAKINGS

THE FRENCH WAR, ORPHANS

• Alesdames Jas. Robinson and Green had charge' of the Patriotic Shop on Saturday, and the takings constituted a record, viz., £93 Os 4d. The effort was on behalf of the French Avar orphans fund, and the promoters decided to transact business in larger premises for the day. The contributed articles for sale and to be otherwise disposed of made a brave display, and business was brisk during the day. A crowd assembled in front of the premises during the early part of the evening to await the result of the various competitions, and were entertained with selections by the Borough Band. The following are the Avjnners of the various competitions: —Cushion, Mrs C. Band; do, Mrs E. Campbell; nightdress, Stella Scadden; baby’s outfit, Mrs Hamer; baby’s dress, V. Haynes; jacket and cap, Mrs Witched (Otaki); suit case (donated by Mr J. M. Barr), Miss P. Beveridge; Miss Woodroofe’s cake, no correct guess of hidden article, “bead,” and sold; sheep (donated by Mr J. H. Robinson), 66 lbs., Mrs A. King, Messrs F. Petrie, Honour and E. Woodroof e; dinner service (donated by Messrs Veitch and Allien), Mr P. Chalk ; wedding cake (donated by Mr M. Perreau), Miss Bryant; live sheep (donated by Mr Scadden), Mr T. Bowe (given back and re-sold); pair of fowls (donated by Mrs Walls), Mrs S. Easton; dinner (donated by Mrs Jeffrey), Mr Scadden, and given back and re-sold; sucking pig (donated by Mr Green), Mr W.
