SCHOOL ATTENDANCE.
The uverage attendance at tho local State school for tho four weeks ending 4th inst. was 302.1, out of an. average roll number of 398, the percentage of attendance being 90.9. The average of the highest attendances for the corresponding period was 370, or 92.9 per cent, of the average roll, a difference of 2 per cent. The headmaster reported at last night’s School Committee meeting that this may- be generally taken as a fair estimate of tho extremely unsatisfactory element in a school of this size. In recent years, through the efforts of the attendance officer, the per ccntage of the unsatisfactory element has been considerably reduced, and at an outside estimate hot more than four per cent, should be found in a grade 5 school. These ealevilations are made upon normal weather and health conditions. During the month six boys and seven girls were admitted, and four boys and eight girls withdrawn. The roll now stands at 396, The attendance competition for each week was as follows; First week, St. IV., 94.7; second week, St. IV., 96.8; third week, St, VI., 98.2; fourth week, St. VI., 98. The head teacher suggested that an attendance shield or banner for competition among the classes, would stimulate regular attendance. Tho Chairman said he whulcl confer with Mrs 11. Moore, with a view to procuring a banner for the school.
