THE HARBOUR LOAN.
ON May 21st the people of the district will be afforded an opportunity of getting control df the Foxton wharf, which up to the present has been controlled by the Railway Department, and the profits from the working of same diverted to the Working Railways Account, instead of being used in the improvement of the harbour. The engineer, to the Wanganui Harbour Board, in a report on the Manawatu river, said it compared more than favourably with the Wanganui river, and as good a harbour as AVangauui could be made at Foxton for much less money than had been expended at Wanganui. By expending portion of the profits from the wharf on the river it could be made navigable for larger vessels, and the trade of the port would be greatly increased. While the wharf remains the property of the Railway Department nothing will be done to improve the harbour, and it therefore behoves all ratepayers to support,, the Board’s proposals at the poll on Tuesday week next, and thus promote the progress of the port and district.
