A TWO MILLION LOSS.
GIVING! evidence befofe the Defence Expenditure Commission at Wellington on Thursday, Lieut-Co-loilel T. W. M’Donald, General Staff Officer, Wellington Military District, submitted the following schedule, showing some of the loss which the country has suffered through lack of organisation, "‘co-ordination, and supervision in New Zealand only: — Excessive training in camps in New Zealand, £1,000,000; excessive cost of ammunition for cadets under 16 years, £55,990; transport, etc., of men on leave, due to centralisation of camps in Wellington district, £211,270; time occupied in travelling between Featherston and Trentham, £40,000; loss on contract system of canteens, £50,000; medically unfit men sent from New Zealand and returning on account of their unfitness, £160,000; reduction of staffs in districts (this is being done now to a great extent in Wellington district), £180,000; loss of arms and equipment, £20,000; loss due to not housing War Expenses Branch in the same building as Base Recprds, and consequent duplicate Records staff, £7,000; loss due to want of organisation at Base Records, £7,000; reduction of D. R, Branch, except 30, £40,000; decentralisation of Trenthara and Featherston Camps and organisation into battalion, etc., £218,000; importation of officers, etc,, from England, which he considered quite unnecessary, £15,000; repairs to boots, £3,300; wastage on training of officers and n.c.o’s., £50,400; total, £2,057,960.
