Wellington, May 8,
The Grand Lodge of New Zealand Freemasons commenced its annual communication to-day. The War Benevolent Fund, started by voluntary effort, now stands at £ll,523. A sum of £13,700 has been invested in the War Loan, and £IOO donated to the Rhd Cross. The latest development of the craft is the establishment of a Masonic “Cheeroh” hutment scheme. The lodges have been invited to contribute to the maintenance of one or raorq huts as near the fighting line as military rule would permit. The hutment already opened is in the New Zealand artillery area, and is under the Y.M.C.A. management. The financial statement for the year shows that the amounts at the credit of the different funds represent a total of £53,088, the principal item being the Widows and Orphans and Aged Masons' Fund £31,594. Out of the interest earnings of the latter fund, £1,285 a year is being paid in annuities. The recipients number 49. Notice has been given of a motion in favour of the permanent location of the Grand Secretary’s office in Wellington. Mr Justice Herdman was unanimously chosen Grand Master.
