NEWS IN BRIEF.

The Muncher Neueste Nachrichten reports that hundreds of British and French officers have recently been sent to the camp for prisoners of war at Stuttgart, in order to share with the population the danger of possible air raids. The new Hungarian Franchise Reform Bill permits women to sit in Parliament. They must be twentyfour years of age, and must be able to read and write the Magyar language. The women voters, it is estimated, will number 200,000. The Chancellor of the Exchequer (England) has received from a woman, who wishes to be known as “A.J.H.”, a gift of £12,000, representing her holding of £11,300, 5 per cent. War Loan, together with £7OO, being interest accrued to date. For an obvious reason the Royal Engineers are known as the “Mudlarks.” The Grenadier Guards are nicknamed the “Sandbags,” and are called “Old • Eyes,” but nobody seems to know exactly why those old sobriquets were ever bestowed. Rebuilding roads in Great Britain will cost £30,000,000, according to estimates recently issued. This sum will be required to reconstruct or strengthen the 15,000 miles of roads in order to enable them to carry the increasing motor traffic. The work will be largely left until after' the war.
