SOLDIER’S DESPERATE ACT.

HACKS HIS FINGERS. Patrick Larry, a private in the 37th Reinforcements, walked into a Wellington warehouse yesterday, and proceeded to hack at his right hand with an axe. Larry r was conveyed by motor to the hospital. An examination of the man’s hand showed that the first two fingei's were badly gashed, but it is hoped that both fingers will be saved, although it may be necessary to amputate one. Larry is about thirty-six years of age, and a native of Ireland. He came from Auckland. His rash act was coolly premeditated, the axe Larry used being purchased shortly before he committed the deed. He also calmly discussed the matter with the police. Larry’s action is an offence under the military regulations.
