STRAYING STOCK.
At Inst night’s Borough Council meeting the pouiulkeeper reported that 14, head of cattle had been impounded during the month; driving fees 10s. The ranger reported that he had impounded It) horses and four cows, and that one cow had been arrested and released to owner. An explanatory letter was also received from the ranger, as requested at last meeting, re arresting two calves on Norbiton Road on February 13th. Complaint had been made that the ranger had arrested the calves and left three cows on the road. This latter the ranger denied. Saw the cows' on the road, and went after them, and they were in charge of a boy, whom he warned, then returned and picked up the calves. At this stage complainant, Councillor’s boy saw me and told the owner of the calves, that I was taking them away. The owner sent after them, and paid the driving fees. Cr Stevenson said he regretted that the ranger was not present in order to afford the latter an opportunity to make good a threat that he mended to “deal with” the speaker. The remark, about the boy was false, and he referred to a dereleclion of duty on the part of the ranger which smacked of favouritism. It was the duty of Councillors to see that the ranger carried put his work properly. ‘ Cr McCall said the ranger had been informed that any owner of straying stock who had twice offended was to be prosecuted. The ranger had not done his duty in not carrying out this instruction. The Mayor said, while the duty of the ranger was a thankless task, it was necessary that the work should be carried out without fear or favour, and he believed the ranger was endeavouring to do his best. —The reports were adopted.
