ILLEGALLY ON LICENSED PREMISES.
OFFENDERS FINED. At yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, before .Mr W. G. Kenrick, S.M., Jack Tawhanga and James Grant, who did not appear, were charged with being illegally on the premises of the Family Hotel at 7.45 p.m. on March 11th. Constable O’Donoghue stated that he visited the Family Hotel on the date mentioned, at about a quarter to eight, and found the two defendants on the premises. ■■ When he asked them what they wore doing there they said they went in to see a man named Spiers. When served with tiie summons subsequently, Tawhanga admitted that he had no right on the premises, and said he would plead guilty. The Magistrate inflicted a line of 20s, with costs 7s, in each case. CASE DISMISSED. Charles Anderson pleaded not guilty to a charge of being illegally on the premises of the Family Hotel on Sunday, March 10th, at 7.15 p.m. Defendant, in evidence, stated that, he went to the hotel to see-a man named Harper to ask him if he woud lake a job flaxcutting. Witness was a flax trammer, and was wanting Jlaxculters at that time. He went into the hotel, and met Harper coming along the passage. He told Harper ho wanted to speak to him, and they were on their way out when (lie constable arrived. Constable O’Donoghnc stated that on going into the hotel lie met Harper and Anderson coming along the passage towards the door. Harper wos a boarder. The bar was closed, and neither the licensee or his wife were about. The Magistrate said he would accept defendant’s explanation, and dismissed the case.
