NEW ZEALAND PENSIONS.
NOW OVER £1,000,000 ANNUALLY. The pensions granted in New Zealand now total over £1,000,000 annually, The following table shows the number of each class of pension now in force in the Dominion, together with the total annual value of the same, and the amounts paid in each class in January, 1918: — Paid in No. in Annual Paid in Pension. Old-age 19,728 482,680 54,780 Widows 2,147 41,759 5,018 Military— Maori War 1,147 41,292 3,945 War 10,750 634,000 48,310 Miners 286 12,012 1,108 The annual value of the war pension does not include the increases under the Finance Act, 1917; and in the case of other pensions the annual values do not take into account the allowances under that Act.
The war pensions granted from Ist April, 1917, to 31st January, 1918, arc as under: —Soldiers, 108; wives and widows (including 631 children), 471; other dependents, 1,304; total, 2,514; annual value £95,055. The soldiers’ allowances total 4,349; wives and widows (with 674 children), 476; other dependents, 82; total, 5,581; annual value, £350,225. Pensions and allowances together thus number 8,095 in all, with a total annual‘value of £445,311.
