DEATH OF MR. JOHN REDMOND.
LEADER OF IRISH NATIONALISTS. * London, Afarch G. The death is announced of Air John Redmond, Leader of the Irish Nationalist Party. Air John Redmond’s health had been failing for some months. His death followed a severe operation which was imperative owing to intestinal obstruction. He made satisfactory progress for a few days, when heart failure supervened. Air John Redmond, son of an Irish member of Parliament, was born in 1851, was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and was afterwards called to the English and Irish Bar. He became a clerk in the Vote Office of the House of Commons, but he gave this up in 1881 to represent a constituency in his native country. Elected for New Ross, he began his Parliamentary career with a record, for on his first day at Westminster he made his maiden speech, created a scene, and was Suspended before the clock struck twelve. In 1885 he was returned for North Wexford, and in 1891 he was elected for Waterford, which he continued to represent till his death. “From the day he entered Parliament, ” said a writer in the Daily Mail, in an interesting personal sketch of the late member, “Mr Redmond has always been a prominent figure in the Nationalist Party. His chance came at the Parnell split. He stood by Parnell, led the little party which remained faithful to him, and finally was selected to guide the destinies of the Nationalists as a whole. This is no easy task at the best of times, and the way Air Redmond has held his followers together in spite of sectional strife is a tribute to his power not only as a politician but as a leader of men.” Air Redmond Avas married in 1883 to Aliss Johanna Dalton, of New South Wales.
