FOXTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
AUTUAIN SHOAV. The Autumn Show held under the auspices of the Foxton Horticultural, Floral and Industrial Society was meld in the Coronation Town Hall on Thursday and last evening, and although not a great success from the point of view of the number of exhibits, the quality of the blooms in most cases made up what was lacking in the'master of quantity. The patronage of the public wab rather scant, which is a matter to be deplored, in view of the necessity of assisting such a valuable society in ouT midst, which under no circumstances should be allowed to want for sufficient public support. On this occasion a very enjoyable vocal and instrumental programme Avas submitted on both evenings, which proved a great success, and it, is to be hoped that similar programmes will,he continued at future shows that the Society may hold. A glance through the prize list will show that the total entries were not equal to the number received of late years for the Autumn Show, and in some of the classes usually well filled there was only one exhibitor, and in a number of classes no entries Were forthcoming. In the pot plants section Airs McMurray Avas the only exhibitor this year, the total number of exhibits being five. Thus the points prize was a walkover for this exhibitor. This class has been a feature of past shows, and the absence of exhibits is to be regretted. A feature of the cut blooms section was the striking display of dahlias, mostly of the cactus variety, which were, however, principally entered by Air AA 7 . Bond, of Palmerston North. It is evident that dahlias are one of Air Bond’s specialities, as the display of blooms entered was worthy of more than passing comment. The champion bloom was much admired. Nevertheless, Airs Galland and Mrs A. H. Easton presented some very good specimens Tor competition, in some instances gaining first and second awards. Taking the cut bloom section right through, the display was somewhat disappointing, classes which should in the ordinary course have offered competition for a good number of exhibitors were on this occasion restricted to one, two and three entries. Such well-known and easily cultivated favourite flowers us antirrhinums, cosmos, and gaillardias were represented with but a single entry in many cases, a fact which must he attributable to the show occurring at a period unsuited to the peculiarities of the soil in this district. The display of fruit was not very good, the competition
being principally between Mr R- ' Hand and Miss A. McColl. Mr Rand secured the points prize. The display of vegetables was quite^pleasing, the number of entries in this section being quite satisfactory, find the quality of the exhibits generally of a good standard. In this section the points prize was annexed by Mr Thus. Webb, of Palmerston North. The special prize for collection of potatoes was carried oft' by the Foxton State School, which also gained first place in the collection of vegetables (school), and second place to Mrs M. Newth for collection of vegetables (open class). The farm produce was only represented by one entry, and the dairy produce section was unrepresented. The cookery class failed to bring forth any competition worth mentioning, the awards in most cases being can lined to firsts for single entries. The children’s cookery class was better represented. The decorative class, although weak in a good many sections, gave fair competition in the bowl of Bowels for- centre of dining table, and especially in the table, in which seven entries were recorded. Miss Hazel Newth carried off the points prize in this section. The children's decorative section brought forth satisfactory entries. Considerable disappointment was expressed at the' poorness of the exhibition generally and the sparse attendance during both afternoon and evenings. No doubt the peculiarity of the Foxton soil and the prevailing dryness of the climate along the coast has a great deal to do. with the weakness of autumn shows locally, but much consolation can be gained by the Society from the fact that when the seasons are favourable to the local soil conditions, such as at the Bulb Show, and Spring Show periods, excellent exhibitions are recoi'ded, which is ample evidence that the Society will still remain in a strong position even if the Autumn Show is not all that may be desired. The president (Mr P. Cf. Jackson), and secretary (Mr Patterson), together with the committee, had all the exhibits well staged and nicely displayed. The judging gave no cause for complaint. During both evenings a musical programme was submitted, those taking part were -Mesdames Tevibtdale, Cronquest, Misses Signal, Bryant, and Messrs J. Colder, Cronquest, IJornblow and Simmons. The accompaniments were played by Misses Signal, Hawke and Cronquest. The Borough Band also played a number of selections. The tea-rooms were in charge of Mrs Procter and assistants, while Miss Woodroofe, as usual, did good business in charge of the sweets stall. The Society possesses a splendid asset in Miss Woodroofe, who supervises the sweet stall at the shows. As the result of this young lady’s efforts, the Society has been handed over £O.
