COST OF LIVING.
NEW ZEALAND'S ENVIABLE POSITION.
In his address at the Wellington Town Hall on Tuesday evening, the Prime Minister quoted the following figures showing New Zealand’s position in regard to the cost of living as compared with that in other countries; — Percentage of increase in the cost of living, taken from the British Board of Trade Labour Gazette, Canadian Labour Gazette, Commonwealth Labour Bulletin, and the monthly abstract of statistics (Government Statistician, New Zealand) ; —Austria, 211.fi; Germany, 110.5; United Kingdom, 102.0; Norway, 144.0; Sweden, 77.0; Holland, 91.0; United States, 41.0; Canada, 44,0; Australia, 25.0; New Zealand. 27.4. Since the war commenced sugar* has been dealt with by arrangement between the Government and the Colonial Sugar Company. This arrangement ensures the people of New Zealand getting sugar cheaper than any other country in the world, as the following quotations will show: —New Zealand, £2l per ton; Victoria, £29 7s fid; South Australia, £29 17s Gd; Western Australia, £3l; Great Britain, £4112s 6tl, New York, £29.
