The Southern Maori by-election resulted as under: — John Hopere IVharewiti Urn .. 242 Henare Parata 217 Teone Matapura Eritana (Ellison) 100 There is one small return tq come, but it cannot affect the result. ’ Mr TJru has staled that politically he is an ahs-Jute Independent, though at the- present juncture he is in favour of the National Government. He holds tbc view, however, that all Maoris should he Independents, and no matter what the parties may he, that they should look after their oavii interests, at the same time doing their best for thf good of the country generally. In his younger days Mr Urn was a very prominent Now Zealand athlete, and has represented Canterbury in both cricket and football.
