SPORTS AT SHANNON.
I SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. One of the most successful sports gatherings yet held at Shannon took place on Saturday, when there was a large attendance on the Recreation Ground to<witness the various athletic events. The meeting was held in aid of the Horowhenua Wounded Soldiers’ Fund, and, judging by the number present, and the liberal manner in which they patronised the side-shows, guessing competitions, etc.,' and purchased art union tickets, the fund should benefit considerably. The weather was hardly as pleasant as it might have been, a little rain falling during the day, but this apparently did not affect the attendance, nor did it spoil the pleasure of those present. The arrangements for the conduct of the gathering were entirely satisfactory, all the officials working with a will, and attending to their duties, with the result that the various events were got off promptly. The local ladies were also energetic in providing refreshments, and contributed their quota to the success of the gathering. Music during the day was contributed by the Palmerston North Band, and received due appreciation. The officials under whose auspices the gathering was held were as follows: —Chairman of committee, Mr G. N. Stephenson; joint secretaries, J. W. Murray and J. T. Pickett; starter and handicapper, Mr G. Watson (Levin); time-keeper, Mr J. Hallam; judges, Messrs E. Law and J. Bovis; judge of tug-of-war, Mr E. Law; judge of wrestling, Mr T. Dalzicll; committee, Messrs G. N. Stephenson, Rev. Palmer, Messrs W. Murdock (Mayor), Watterson, F. Kirkton, I). Laurvig, L. Chilterson, J. Jensen and V. Croon. Competition in most of the events was keen, and considerable enthusiasm was displayed by the public in the various contests.
