TWO YOUNG GIRLS DROWNED.
Wanganui, Jan. 23. While bathing in the Wanganui river near Castlecliff this afternoon, two girls, Phyllis Walker, sixteen years, and Ida Beckner, ten years, were drowned. Phyllis Walker could not swim, and got out of her depth. Ida Beckner, who could rtwim a little, tried to save her, hut both sank together. Three young girl companions could not render assistance, and ran screaming for help. A number of men working in the locality went to the scene, but the spot where the girls disappeared could not. be definitely located. Dragging operations were carried on for about an hour. Both bodies wore recovered from a deep hole, where (here is over ten feet of water. Artilicial respiration was tried.unsuccessfully. Ida Becker is an only child.
