A PLUCKY RESCUE.
BATHER’S NARROW ESCAPE
on Sunday afternoon the Manawatu river, about half a mile below the Fitzherbert Street, bridge, Palmerston N., was the scene of an exciting bathing accident and rescue. It appears that a small boy named Carson, son of Mr A. Carson, of Main Street, who was bathing in the river near the bank of the Esplanade, got into difficulties, and was carried away by the current. His screams for help were heard by some ladies in the vicinity, and one of them, Mrs Carter, waded in after him. The plucky lady managed to get hold of the boy, but the current washed them downstream, where they were caught by a snag. Mrs Carter’s cries for help were heard by Mr G. White, a returned soldier, who, with great defficulty, succeeded in getting a rope to her, along which young Carson was brought safely ashore, none the worse for his experience. Mrs Carter then made an attempt to reach the shore, with the help of Mr White, when Constables Cole and Jones arrived on the scene, and the latter at once swam to Mrs Carter's assistance, and succeeded in bringing the now almost exhausted lady to the bank. She had been clinging to the snag for fully an hour before being rescued. Mrs Carter’s prompt action undoubtedly saved the boy’s life, and her conduct is most courageous and praiseworthy. Constable Jones and Mr White are also to be commended for their splendid rescue work, which was probably the means of saving the lives of both Mrs Carter and young Carson. —Standard.
