MOTOR ACCIDENT.
COLLISION ON RAILWAY CROSSING.
Hawera, Jan. 0.
A serious accident occurred on the South road railway crossing on Saturday afternoon, when a motor car driven by Captain MacDairmid, N.Z.M.C., Featberston, and formerly of New Plymouth*, collided with the outgoing train to Wanganui. Mrs MacDairmid, mother of Captain MacDairmid, was also in the car.
The cowcatcher struck the car in the centre, and carried it along the line for a distance of thirty or forty yards, throwing the occupants on to the banks. Mrs MacDairmid was rendered unconscious and taken to a private hospital in the motor ambulance. No bones were broken, but she is badly bruised, and is progressing favourably. Capt. MacDairmid escaped unhurt. When the, driver of the train observed the ear he promptly applied the brakes, and did the utmost possible to avoid the accident, Lut it seems that Capt. MacDairmid did not see the train approaching until within a few yards of the crossing, which is a bad one, The car is smashed.almost beyond recognition, and the occupants had a miraculous escape.
