THE CHRISTCHURCH TRAGEDY.
GARRICK CHARGED WITH ALLEGED MURDER. Christchurch, Dec. 21. At the Police Court to-day, Winifred Garrick, a single woman aged 27 years, was charged with the wilful murder of her son, Donald Lewis Garrick, aged 3 years, at Addington on December Bth. Mr Raymond, who prosecuted, said the Crown alleged that the motive for the crime lay in the state of mind of the accused following imprisonment for two years for previously abandoning her child. William Hart, clerk of the Magistrate’s Court, said the accused (Garrick) called at the office on November 27th, regarding a summons for maintenance, and eventually signed her consent to the order, though she seemed mnwilling, declaring that she could not afford to pay. Mrs Ea therm Green, a member of the Hospital Board, said she frequently visited accused while in prison for abandoning her child, and also since the latter’s release. Accused did not want to pay maintenance. Witness urged her to allow proceedings against the father, but she refused to give the man’s name.
