SHOOTING ACCIDENT.
AT OROUA DOWNS. A shooting accident occurred at Oroua Downs yesterday afternooß. Bennett Godfrey Hammond, ill years of ago, son of Mr and Mrs H, G. Hammond, of Oroua Downs, was out rabbit shooting with a pearitlc. He wounded a rabbit, and in order to kill it, hit (he rabbit over the head with the bull of (he rille. The charge in the rifle exploded, the bullet entering Ihe boy’s abdomen. He Wiis about a mile from his homo at the lime, and alone, but with great fortitude struggled back home. Medical aid was summoned, . and the sufferer removed to a pri-\, vale hospital at Palmerston North, where an operation was performed. The bullet, however, was not ex- q traded. It was found that four punctures had been made in the intestines, Upon inquiry to-day wo learn that the boy spent a fairly good night, and was progressing as well as could be expected, although still in a very critical condition.
