REGISTER OR QUIT.
THE Registration pf Aliens Act has revealed the fact that there ijre a very large number of foreigners .eiir gaged in ilaxmilling operations in ■ this district, principally flaxcutting. The men represent many national) - ties, their previous occupations b(L
ing seamen.-. or waterside workers. The restrictions in regard, to omployment on vessels and at the ports have compelled many of them to come inland, and the demand for flaxcutters has provided them with most remunerative work, their earnjngs averaging from £1 to. £2 per day. As employers of labour are liable to a substantial penalty for employing unregistered aliens, the police have been given every assistance by flaxmillers and contractors in respect to the regulations. “Register or quit” is the order to all foreigners.
