Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4,1917. SCHOOL EXHIBITS.

AT tlic recent local Horlicultut’nl Society's Spring Show,An (lie school work division, a very pleasing display was afforded by the design work. This was done in colours, and "’as ip all wises executed with the brush. The work exhibited showed that the children are acquiring q true conception of the meaning of design —the careful adaptation and arrangement of natural forms, .and not the haphazard covering of a space with leaves, flowers, and other forms that sometimes passes for design. The effect on the child mind of a training in this subject is incalculable, and we doubt.if parents realise its significance. It is a subject eminently appropriate to find a place at a horticultural show, and all tlower-lovcm will find delight in the way their favourites arc utilised in the beautifying of everyday objects, for although the designs shown were only the ornamentation of a geometrical space, it must be understood that this is only'the first step towards its application to the ornamentation of things of everyday use. The work of one competitor, Eileen Daly, of College Street School, calls for special praise. It was aft excellently conceived design based oft a fose, and was admirably carried out, in fact, to our mind it appeared worthy of a place in any class, and we congratulate proud originator. In the senior divhsiofl w,e congratulate Elvina Smith, of the l/\cal school, on her very fine piece of wnj-k, W.Q hope that- even greater ciicouriigpipept will he given by the Society in.the future to School work, as such exhibitions stimulate the children to'a higher standard. In our next issue we will deal with oHiey phases of the school exhibits shown.
