FLAXMILL FIRE.

AT SHANNON,

A fire broke out in the scutching shed of Mr C. H. Speirs’ tlaxmill at Shannon shortly after 12 o’clock on Thursday. The employees were at dinner at the time of the outbreak, and the fire had a good hold before it was noticed. It was found impossible to save the scutching and tow sheds, or to save much fibre from the scutching shed, only two bales being got out, but with the assistance of the employees from the Miranui mill the total destruction of the stripping and engine house was prevented, hut they suffered considerable damage. Mr Speirs will bo a heavy lose] 1 , as the insurance will not nearly cover the damage. There were 25 halos of scutched fibre in the scutching shed, which, with the exception of two bales, was all destroyed, as also was between, five and ten tons of unscutched hemp. . It is hoped to get the stripping Building and machinery in order for starting again in about a week, and the re-erection of the other buildings will be commenced at once.
