FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SPECIAL MEETING,

A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last night to consider the position in connection with the sanitary service, the applicant who was appointed at the previous meeting having-since declined to go on with the work. There were present : —The Mayor (Mr John Chrystalljf and Crs. Coley, Walker, McColl, Thompson, and Henderson. An apology for absence was received from Cr. McMurray. The Mayor said that Mr Lockwood, who was appointed to the position of nightman at the last meeting of the Council, had notified him that he was unable to do, the work required. He (the Mayor) had seen Mr Mitchell, and he had agreed to continue the work for another week. It was necessary that a successor should be appointed without delay. After some discussion it was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Henderson, that Mr J. Parker be appointed, Cr Coley alone dissenting. Cr Coley said lie understood in a large number of premises in the borough kerosene tins were being used instead of the regulation'live gallon oil drum. This should not be allowed. He said that he had recently purchased 130 oil drums, all fitted with iron handles, and was prepared to sell the lot to the Council at sixpence each delivered. He did not want any money for them, and would hand over the whole amount he received from the Council to the Patriotic Society. It was decided on the motion pf the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley, that every receptacle for njghtsoil must be a five gallon oil drum.

Cr McColl brought up the question of a better sanitary system. He said the system in vogue in Levin, where sealed cans were in use, was a great improvement on the Foxton system, and by adopting it many of the objectionable features of our sanitary system would be removed.

The Mayor and Cr Coley agreed that the Levin system was far better than the-ope in use ip FoJttop, apd although it would be more costly, was well worth consideration,
