THE HARBOUR BOARD BILL.
MR. HENNESSY’S WORK TO BE RECOGNISED. At last night’s Council meeting it was decided on the motion of Crs Thompson and Henderson that a letter be forwarded to Mr P. J. Hennessy, Chairman of the Foxton Harbour Board, expressing the Council’s appreciation of his efforts in connection with the Foxton Harbour Board Bill, and congratulating him on the Bill becoming law. The Mayor said that there was no question but that had it not been for Mr Hennessy the Foxton Harbour Board Avould not have been in Existence. He had worked unceasingly for many years to get possession of the wharf, and at last his efforts had been crowned-with success. The Railway Department had asked £28,000 for the whal’f, but same had now been obtained for £5,000, Mr Hennessy was deserving of the thanks of the whole community for the work he had done in this connection. If it were not war time he would suggest that Mr Hennessy be entertained at a banquet. He considered they should do something to recognise the work he had done, and suggested a presentation in the form of a suitably inscribed gold watch. He said he would move in this direction at a later meeting. Cr. Thompson said the present satisfactory position in connection with the wharf was undoubtedly mainly due to Mr Hennessy’s work. Cr Henderson said Mr Hennessy deserved great credit for his work for years past. He had never shown the white feather, but had persevered and at last was able to see his efforts crowned with success, Cr Stevenson said that Mr Hennessy’s indefatigable energy in the interests of the port were deserving of the heartiest thanks of the community. • Cr Walker said he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce when Mr Hennessy, as president of that body, first brought forward the question of the formation of a Harbour Board, and he knew what a great amount of work Mr Hennessy did at that time in gathering statistics, etc. The town should do something to recognise his services in this matter. Crs Hurley and MeColl also spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Hennessy’s efforts, and the motion was put and carried unanimously. It was also decided on the motion of Crs Thompson and Hurley, that Messrs Field, Ell and Newman' M’s.P., be / thanked for their efforts in connection with the passing of the Foxton Harbour Bill through Parliament, and the conservation of the Round Bush,
