The House, after a lengthy dc-: bate, exempted clergy from military service in the Expeditionary Forccj Bill.

Sir Joseph Ward then moved his. amendment exempting any persoi* who is a teacher in any public school under the Education Act, or a teacher, lecturer, or professor in any secondary school, college, or university under the University Act, or teacher in any private school not conducted for pecuniary profit.

Sir James Allen said he could not accept the amendment.

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

THROWS OUT EXEMPTION CLAUSE.

The question as to whether the Marist Brothers and teachers generally should be exempt from military service was discussed by the Legislative Council last night, when the Expeditionary Forces Amendment Bill, as passed by the House of > Representatives, was debated upon. The Council divided on the question as to whether the clause exempting teachers should be a part of the Bill. The clause was deleted by 11 votes to 4. The division list was as follows; For the Clause. Members from the House and Legislative Council will be appointed to confer on the matter.
