COASTAL SEAMEN’S STRIKE.
ARBITRATION COURT JUDGMENT. Wellington, Oet, 17. The Arbitration Court gave judgment to-day dealing with the interpretation of the points in dispute in the agreement between the coastal shipowners and the seamen, the points being directed in favour of the employers’ view. In the agreement in regard to two men in a watch, the Court doubted its jurisdiction to deal with the question, but expressed the opinion that on the vessels in question it was not essential to safety to carry two deck hands in a watch, in addition to the officer.
THE TROUBLE SPREADING.
Auckland, Oct. 17,
The coastal steamer Awahou has been delayed since ten o’clock last 'night for deck hands, the latter having left after giving 25 hours’ notice, without giving a reason. So far the agents are unable to fill their places. The Awahou is a vessel having only one seaman on watch at sea.
SEAMEN FINDING WORK,
Wellington, Yesterday. It is reported that a great number of the seamen affected by the coastal steamship dispute have found employment elsewhere. The majority of them are married men, and they have either gone into the country or taken shore jobs until the trouble is over. Single men, who are obliged to keep to the service, are signing on with other ships.
