ANOTHER LOAN TO BE RAISED.

- INCREASE]:) TAXATION,

Chiefly'on account of the cost of the war, the Minister of Finance will shortly be forced to submit to Parliament proposals for largely increased expenditure,- and, therefore, largely increased taxation. In the near future there will be proposed a loan of some extra four millions, in addition to the original twenty-four million loan, which it was hoped would have been sufficient. In most cases of departmental work expenditure is increasing out of proportion to revenue, which, it is certain, will be seriously curtailed if when the proposed shortening of hours of opening of licensed premises comes into operation. Already the members of the Public Service are awaiting with considerable interest the possibility of their salaries being cut down. That is only a small feature of the difficulty that is awaiting the public. Among other suggestions is a big increase in death duties and succession duties, and a lifting up of the graduation in the land tax. —Post.
