MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. /' The ordinary meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held on Saturday. Present; Crs Sir James Wilson (chairman), 11. 11. Hunt, B. Gray, W. E. Barber, J. Strode Penney, W. J. Phillips, and 11. G. Hammond. CORRESPONDENCE. The District Health Officer drew atlontiton to the had state of a road off the main Foxton-Shannon road, owing to traffic daily of 100 head of cattle. —To be attended to as soon as the weather will allow. The Chief Mechanical Engineer offered to sell to the Council the locomotive Picton for £I,OOO. Mr Edward Newman, M.P., informed the Council that the Tramway Bill had been passed. —The Chairman said there were practically no alterations made in the Bill. Mr Newman also wrote, stating he would do his best to have a certain piece of land set aside by the Government as a residential seaside resort. The Counties’ Association recommended that the local bodies should form a mutual accident and insurance association. Mr W. Pearce asked that a drain be cut along the front of his property on the Beach road. Mr A. P. Easton asked that the road leading to his property be metalled, TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT Owing to the coastal boat strike no goods have been coming into Foxton, with a result that traffic on the line has been poor, and a debit of £O3 17s lOd is shown for the month’s working. The chief items of traffic were; Merchandise 112 y tons, manure 07 tons, timber 33,500 feet, metal 210 cubic yards, fares amounted to £2 12s 7d. The total receipts from all sour-, ees for the six months ended September 30th constitute a record for the same period, amounting to £3739 8s 3d. The expenditure for I he same period amounted to £3,143 13s 3d. A credit balance of £595 15s was therefore made for the six monthes. The Manawatu County Bill has passed all stages of the House with small amendments. On 27ih ultimo Messrs Hiekford, DiiTey ami myself inspected the G class engine purchased by the Castlecliff Railway Company from the Government. The opinions of those who have to do wilh the engine is that a locomotive of this description* would be suitable for our purposes. The taro weight on the four driving wheels is 7 tons 10 cwt,, as against the greatest tare of (i tons lOcwt. of the locomotive Manawatu. The opinion is that the greater length of the G class locomotive, combined wiih a four-wheeled coupled engine, would he easier on our vails than a six wheeled couplc’d engine of lighter weight. The old bailer from the locomotive Rangitikci lias been sold for £2. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Awahou Riding. —Metal has been delivered by the (ram to repair the Foxton road in (his riding, and also, the Whirokiuo road. Metal has been carted and repairs effected to the Foxton-Shajmon road. Cr. Barber and myself interviewed Mr T. Bowe with reference to making a special rating district for the purpose of raising a loan to metal the road up to Dir T. Howe’s house. After a good deal of discussion on the matter, it was decided to include (lie Kari Kari road, and 1 would suggest that a loan of £1,240 he raised to metal these two roads.
