A LINK WITH THE PAST.
Now and again wc arc shown ancient back numbers of the “Herald’ which are retained by old residents by reason of some item of personal interest. When at Otaki recently a. resident there, in discussing old times with Mr Harry Coley, referred to the date of a fatal accident in which Mr Coley was concerned. The Otaki resident forwarded Mr Coley a copy of the “Herald” of January sth, iSBO, containing particulars of the accident. Mr Coley at that time, together with his brother, Mr George Coley, was then engaged in the carrying business between Mellington and Fox ton. Otaki was the stopping place, and as Mr Coley drove his team into the yard of the hotel at night the wheel of the dray passed over the body of a young man. The report says, “had Mr Coley gone a few yards in another direction he must have driven over several more men lying drunk in the yard.” A verdict of “accidental death” was returned, and much sympathy was expressed for Mr Coley, “who is known to he a thoroughly sober, earefnl driver.” Other items of interest in the paper under notice are: Helium steamer fares to Wellington by the Jane Douglas (Captain Fraser), .Cl; the proprietor of the Herald (Mr John 11. Russell) requests prompt settlements of accounts —“particularly in cases where subscriptions for more than one year arc due”; the local ladies are informed that the latest number of the “Young Ladies’ Journal” can be obtained at the office of this paper; 8.. L. Pirani, barrister and solicitor (brother.of Mr Fred Pirani), notifies that he visits Fox ton periodically, R. E. Gray, of the Louth Nursery, manufacturers raspberry syrup from pure locally-grown fruit; the election of Messrs James Cootcs, John Forsyth Anderson, and Alexander John Hadfield as members of the Horowhenna County Council is notified, there were seven candidates; Whyte’s Hotel (E. Jewell, proprietor), notify best Bass ale on draught; the Manawatu Co-opera-tive Steamship Company (W. G. Robinson secretary) notify a third call of 5s per share; W. L. Coe and W. C. Gavin, saddle and harness makers; the Co-operative .Bakery Co. deliver bread at 3.id the 21b. loaf and 7d the 41b. loaf; John McCulloch is the Manawatu County Clerk; E, J. Davies is a practical watchmaker and jeweller; John IT. Coup sells Christmas cakes, iced, and with motto, at Is per lb., and also lias regular supplies of Sydney and Fiji fruit; 11. Doggett, general draper, offers substantial discounts to purchasers; C. Honorc, general merchant, has a well displayed advertisement; Edmund Osborne, draper, has a particularly interesting advertisement, and offers the advice that “he that hasleth to be rich will fall into a snare”; T. H. Treloar is a shoeing and general blacksmith; E. Colo, boots and shoes; Austin’s private boardinghouse (late Westwood’s Temperance Hotel); G. Coley advertises timber of all kinds and sizes for sale; the programme of the Foxton Racing Club (John R. Russell, hon. sec.) consists of five events, the big event being the handicap of 110 sovs, distance one mile and three-quarters, Mr F. Robinson is president, and J, McLennan vice, judge Mr F. Thynne; Thynne, Linton and Co., are land agents, auctioneers, shipping and forwarding agents.
