MANAWATU COUNTY BILL.
The Manawatu County Empowering Bill, in Mr E. Newman’s charge, had an easy passage through all its stages in the House last night Its object was explained by Mr New-., ’man as being to enable the watu Council to extend its tramway to carry out improvements. Mr Pearce (Palea), Chairman of the Local Bills Committee, described the measure as a very useful one; in s fact it would be a good thing to extend the tramway to Marton V Junction to joiiu with the Main Trunk line. He was surprised the County Council had not asked for powers, as the extension would only be four miles. Dr. Newman facetiously suggested that the Bill ought to provide for diverting the Main Trunk line from Marton through Bulls to jPoxton. The present Bill was a beginning, and was good as far as it went. (Laughter).
