COASTAL STEAMERS.
MEN SIGNED OFF. The crew of coastal steamers who are refusing to proceed to sea except '.villi two men in a watch, were signed off yesterday. In some eases Wellington is not the home port at which the men wore engaged, and they are refusing to sign clear, unless given a free passage to their home port. Apart from the seamen and /iremen involved (about two hundred), over a hundred waterside workers who follow the coastal cargo work arc also thrown out of employment by (ho idleness of the small craft. For some of the smaller towns, which cannot bo reached conveniently by rail, the interruption of regular sea traffic is a- serious matter. Crews from the following vessels arc signing off: —Woollen, Baden Powell, Kaitoa, Nikan, Defender, Ilnia, Queen of the South, ITimitangi, Opawa, Koutunni, Blenheim, Ripple, Kapiti, Ilawera, Kapuni, Waverley, and Alexander. The Wakatu paid off on Tuesday. There were persisten rumours on the Wellington waterfront yesterday that the Anekland men'had eomo out in sympathy with the local unionists.
