BULB SHOW.

The annual Bulb Show, held under the auspices of the local Horticultural Society, was formally opened in the Town Hall on Tuesday af - ternoon by the Mayor (Mr J. Chrystall). The Mayor congratulated the Society upon its efforts in connection with horticultural affairs. The exhibitions were of great educational value, and also fostered a love of the beautiful. The aims and objects of the Society were entitled to the whole-hearted support of the community. The Mayor paid a tribute to the enthusiasm of the committee. lie referred to the cookery display by the children, and said the exhibits would equal anything of a similar nature in any large centre. The children's work reflected credit upon their technical instructor. He congratulated the Society npon the Show, and wished them continued success. The display of blooms was equal to any previously shown, and some magnificent specimens of the bulb family were to be scon. The principal exhibitors were Mosdamcs Gallaml, A. S. Easton, Jackson, Hornblow, M<-Murray, and Miss Nye. The Citizen's Trophy was won outright (his year hy Mrs Galiaud, with magnificent specimens of Lord Huberts, Cornelia, and olory of Leiden. Mesdames Jackson and A. S. Easton were I lie runners-up. The vegetable section did not attract many entries, while the section for apples was unrepresented. The decorative classes were well filled, and attracted a good deal of interest. Sixty-seven entries were received in the children’s cookery sections, and the exhibits were of a very high order. The stewards have reduced their work to a line art, and as a result the exhibits were well staged, and the work of the judges greatly facilitated. The decorative classes were particularly artistic, and w'ere very favourably commented upon. The attendance of the public, both in Ihe afternoon and evening, was good. The tea-room, under the supervision of Mrs Procter, was well patronised, as was the sweets stall, so ably supervised by Miss Woodrooie. During the evening Mr Belly’s orchestra anil the Borough Baud played musical selections. Mr A. J. Similar, of Palmerston North, judged Urn cut blooms, pot plants, and vegetables, Mrs Lionel Abraham (Palmerston N.) the decorative classes, and Mr John Malls the cookery. Mr IL Ashmore gue.-sod the nearest to the correct weight of a silling (>f eggs donated by Mr M. 11. 'Walkin’, 33 0z5., the correct weight being 34 ozs, Tiie mi miter guessing for a cake presented by Mr Walls was won by Mrs McLeod, Mrs Symes and Mr Osborne, who each guessed the correct number, 11. The previous winners of the Citizens’ Trophy were; —1013, Mrs Galland; 1914, Mr IL Rocket; 1915, Mrs Galland; 1910, Mrs P. G. Jackson; 1917, Mrs Galland. The receipts, exclusive of entry foes, were; Door takings 14 Is Oil, Aca-room, £1 3s (id, sweets £4 7s Gd, sale of exhibits l(is 9d, competitions £1 Os. ■ .
