MAORI POPULATION.
THE total Maori population of tlie Dominion at the end of last year was, according to the census returns, 49,770, which is a decrease of 08 on the census figures of 1911. In the preceding five-yearly period the native population increased by 2,113, and hat] it not been for the war a similar increase would have been shown in last year’s census, as about 2,000 of ony Maori citizens have left for the front, a large pro.portion of which are still absent, fighting for the Empire.- Again, enumerators in some of the North Island districts, particularly Tara-
naki ami Waikato, report that same difficulty was experienced,in obtaining information owing to the fear of the natives that the statistics were being secured for the purpose of recruiting, which may also have affected the figures to some extent. Of the total Maori population, 46,247 are stated as full-blooded Maoris and 3,528 as half-castes, while of the Maoris 24,019 arc males and 22,228 females. It is interesting to note that there has been a steady increase in the Maori population' since 1896, when it humbered" 30,854, to which number it had declined from 45,470 at the time of the first census in 1874.
