N.Z. HOSPITAL SHIPS.
THEIR COST TO DATE. A return asked for by Mr W. 11. Field, M.P., was' presented to Parliament on Tuesday showing accrued expenditure on the New Zealand hospital ships to 31st March, 1917. The expenditure on the Mahcno (four voyages) for fitting and provisioning in New Zealand was £84,991; hire, £07,318; maintenance (including coal, water, canal dues, stores purchased abroad, and general expenses), £37,937; pay of staff, £22,925; pay of crew, £29,757; total, £242,904. The following are figures for the Manama (three voyages): Fitting and provisioning in New Zealand, £88,494; hire, £70,301; maintenance, £38,711; pay of staff, £25,025; pay of crew, £23,722; total, £242,273. The value of the equipment and stores supplied ex stock Defence stores to 31st July, 1917, is;—Maheno, £087; Manama, £372. The expenditure in money from private sources to Ist February, 1917, on the Mahcno has been £19,398, and on the Manama £20,932, a balance of £8,892 being still in hand. This money has been expended on medical equipment. The quantities and cost of wines, spirits, and malt liquors placed on board and under the control of (lie senior medical officer for .medical purposes arc as follow: —Maheno, first voyage, £028; second voyage, £122; third and fourth voyages, nil; fifth voyage, £140; total, £BBI. Manama, first voyage, £792; second voyage, £81; third voyage, £O3; total, £937.
