REEVE STREET IMPROVEMENTS.

O— ~ ■- Some time ago the residents of Brown and Be eve Streets petitioned the Council to improve the roadway in that locality. The Works Committee inspected the locality, which does not possess a formed road. The Council decided to do something for the residents, .and at the same time stated that if the residents bought portion of the road frontage in Reeve Street, half a chain in width, bringing the road to a uniform width of a chain, the purchase money, some £7O, would bo expended on forming and metalling. A circular to this effect was sent to the residents, but was so worded as to imply that if the frontages were not purchased nothing would be done by the Council. Cr. Stevenson brought the matter up at Tuesday’s Council meeting. He stated that all except one property owner in Reeve Street was willing lo purchase the road frontage, and he believed if time were allowed for payment the other one interested would do the same. He said the Town Clerk’s letter had been const rued by those interested to mean -that unless the property owners purchased (ho frontages nothing would be done by (he Council. He quoted the Town Clerk’s footnote, as follows: “Kindly advise me by return mail if you arc willing to purchase. You will note that unless all the owners are agreeable to buy nothing can be done in this maflex’.” Cr Stevenson then disked (he Mayor if the improvements hinged upon the purchase of the frontages? The Mayor said it is the Council’s intention to improve the road, hut if the frontages were purchased it would enable the Council lo carry out more permanent work', ft would lie. necessary for all the property owners to purchase the frontages in order In have Ihc road a uniform width. The object of fencing Brown Sired was to protect sand-binding plants. Cr Stevenson said he was glad to hoar from the Mayor that improvements to this sired did not hinge on the question of purchasing frontages by property owners in the -locality, its the footnote in the Town Clerk’s letter seemed to indicate.
