TOWN CLERK’S REPORT.

The. Town Clerk reported ns follows nt last night's Council meeting on the workings of the borough for the past month; — “The road staff has been engaged on the following works during the past month, viz., kerbing footpaths in Cook and Johhston Streets, spreading and breaking metal on Sandon Hoad and Hussell and ■Johnston Streets,, repairing bridge in Harbour Street, replacing fence in Harbour Street reserve, repairing roads, and general maintenance work. It is proposed to proceed with the metalling of the various streets of the borough and general maintenance work during the present month.

“Harbour Street Bridge. —Part of the foundation of this bridge gave way on the 23rd ultimo, and let down one of the dacking planks. The foreman remedied the fault next morning, but he is of opinion that the Council should consider the matter of erecting a concrete strneinre similar to that in Main Street over the drain during the summer months. A less expensive method would ho to pipe the drain with bin. reinforced concrete pipes. ‘•.Metal. —Although an order for 500 yards of metal was placed with j lie contractors some three months ago on the condition that two ’.nicks (twelve yards) he delivered dally, only !Hi yards have been dedlivercd to dale, and the quality of

same has been far from satisfactory. I would recommend that the present order he cancelled and one lor 500 yards placed with the Belmont Quarry Company, The metal supplied by (his firm is crushed quarry stone of a high grade, and-is recommended by several road engineers in this province. Belmont metal will cost 0s (id per ton on trucks a I Foxton, as against -lackeyiowu metal 7s per yard on trucks at Foxion, The difference in the lasting powers of the two metals is not to he compared, as the quarry metal will, if spread properly and blinded, last for years.”
